The Institute of Social Studies (ISS) is an international center of expertise in the field of Policy and Social Science. Since its inception in 1952, ISS has been offering high quality master and PhD programs, and specialized courses to students and professionals from all over the world. ISS brings together students from developed and developing countries in a stimulating European environment. ISS has a truly international teaching staff that advises agencies and (local) governments around the world.
Education and Research
ISS provides state of the art education in the social sciences to postgraduate professionals. Programs and courses – which are entirely taught in English - provide knowledge and insights in a number of fields, including development economics, sociology, politics, public policy and management, governance, gender, employment, population, social security, children and youth, and human rights. The Institute of Social Studies offers a challenging master program in Development Studies and a four-year PhD program. All degrees are recognised internationally and by the Netherlands Government.
ISS offers a number of joint programs in cooperation with prominent partner universities worldwide. Partners include: Central European University (Hungary), University of York (Ireland), Maxwell School of Syracuse University (USA), Hertie School of Governance Berlin (Germany) and the Ritsumeikan University (Japan).
