This one-year Master's specialisation explores the history of the visual arts and architecture of the Netherlands from the Late Middle Ages to the present.
The study of art history should start from original works of art. Where better, then, to study the history of Netherlandish art than in the Netherlands? This comprehensive Master's specialisation, unique in the Dutch academic world, explores the history of the visual arts and architecture of the Netherlands from the Late Middle Ages to the present. It gives students from different countries the opportunity to specialise in one of the most fascinating fields in art history. In this programme you will find at your fingertips the objects of study themselves, as well as a vast collection of archival documents and secondary literature on this enormously rich artistic patrimony.
Nijmegen presents ample possibilities for you to study (and enjoy) the crucial monuments in situ, as well as all the important collections, archives and libraries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Nijmegen is an ideal base for travelling by train, car or plane to museums in other European countries. Naturally, this element of personal observation of works of art is incorporated in our programme, which includes two five-day excursions organised and guided by specialists in the field.
During the programme, you become acquainted with and deepen your knowledge of Netherlandish art and architecture as well as the relevant theories and scientific methods. We value a broad, interdisciplinary approach with a perspective that explicitly takes into account the international context of Netherlandish art. And with the language learning facilities on offer at Radboud University, you get the chance to gain even more in-depth knowledge of the primary sources and literature by learning or improving your Dutch.
