Program description

Focuses on design research, design-entrepreneurship and business skills, related to complex combinations of products and services.

The Master Product Design is an internationally focused program and trains designers with analytical and entrepreneurial skills combining sustainably designed products with services. Product designers market their products and services while recognizing social interests, business goals and with the consumers' expectations in mind."

Today's professionalization of (product) designers should focus on entrepreneurship and business skills, led by the trend that product design involves complex combinations of products and services, which are interlinked by entrepreneurship. An example of this complexity is the development of the public transport payment system for the Netherlands, resulting in the OV-Chip-card, with the design of vending machines, access gates, internet services, instruction graphics and so on. The product designer involved in such huge interdisciplinary projects has to be able to design, think and communicate on 'system level' rather than 'product level' and must have excellent entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of business-models. To fit these needs, the new master's degree program Product Design in Rotterdam combines employment and education, aiming on designers with proven professional experience who want to expand their capabilities in design-entrepreneurship and the business of design.

The Master Product Design program focuses on professional designers ready to accomplish a higher analytical and professional level: the product designer on master level. In order to be considered for admission the student should meet the requirements. .

The Master Product Design is a two-year, part time program with a strong connection between the study program and the student's work situation. If necessary the university is able to provide the student with a suitable study / work place at a design bureau or with a company.
