Program description

This research Master’s addresses all aspects of lithosphere behaviour and basin development. Quantitative knowledge of sedimentary basins is becoming increasingly important to sustainable development in Europe.

Not only are sedimentary basins mankind’s repositories for water, geothermal energy, and hydrocarbon resources, but they also host media for the storage of reclaimed water, natural gas and waste (including nuclear waste), and, perhaps most importantly, CO2

By gaining an international Master’s degree in Geosciences of Basins and Lithosphere you will proof your insights into basin evolution, structures formed by underlying processes, and the relationships between inner-basin sedimentary sequences, fluid flow, and the deeper processes caused by lithospheric deformation.

The MSc degree programme in Geosciences of Basins and Lithosphere (GBL) is a research Master's programme at VU University Amsterdam and a participant in the European Master of Geosciences of Basins and Lithosphere (BasinMaster) programme.

Our network of partner universities will enable you to study various specializations abroad. Our industry partnerships with major players in basin geology contribute to the programme by providing resources including in-house courses, visiting lecturers and research placements.

When students finish the BasinMaster programme they obtain two diplomas (Double-Degree) from universities in the consortium.
