Program description

The master's degree in Art History is a continuation and extension of a bachelor's degree. The training basically centres on the history of the western visual arts, architecture (architectural history), applied arts and industrial design. Visual arts does not only comprise painting and sculpture but also drawing, graphic art, photography and present-day media. Art history departs from various approaches, of which the stylistic, the iconological and the typological approaches are examples. Stylistic research focuses on the various art styles and their development. Iconological research is about the meaning of representations whilst typological research focuses on the relation between function and form. The broader socio-historical context of art is also discussed.
