The Master's in American Studies examines the (multi)cultural, ethnic and national identity of the United States from a comparative, cross-cultural perspective.
The Master's programme in American Studies focuses on the unique characteristics of American culture, society, and history. In this interdisciplinary Master's the U.S. is not studied in isolation; rather the programme employs a comparative international and multicultural approach to examine the nature of American civilisation and its relation to the world. A broad view of American identity is presented, embracing cultural and political history, literature, film and the arts. You learn to identify and analyse abstract concepts such as multiculturalism, ethnicity and national identity within the context of U.S. society, and to compare the American political system with other political and societal systems. You develop a keen eye for important academic debates and learn to place research data in a theoretical and methodical framework.
The courses in this one year taught programme are largely presented as seminars, in which you interact with classmates and faculty members. You apply new knowledge and skills to your final Master's thesis; it is possible to complete your preparatory research for the thesis at an exchange school in the Netherlands or abroad.
